The very talented designer and good friend of the Sketch family, John Florez, designed September’s Space image.John’s allusive brief was ‘something newsworthy’ and we love that the now globally infamous Ice Bucket Challenge was his inspiration.
This clever challenge campaign was created to raise awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and it went viral on social media midway throughout this year. Some have even termed it a ‘pop culture phenomenon.’
While the challenge has not been totally free of criticism, the old bucket of ice and water over the head has done more for raising awareness of ALS than any other initiative to date. It has attracted participation and donations from celebrities, politicians, athletes and the every day you-and-me the world over.
“The New York Times reported that the ALS Association had received $41.8 million in donations from July 29 until August 21. More than 739,000 new donors have given money to the association, which is more than double the $19.4 million in total contributions the association received during the year that ended January 31, 2013.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Bucket_Challenge).
A massive shout-out to John for being Sketch Corp.’s first Space guest designer, and for finding a way of further spreading awareness of ALS while managing to stay dry at the same time.
