On Tuesday 11 November two members of the Sketch Team ventured down to Sydney for the 2014 My Business Awards. While we didn’t take home the gong for Best Start-Up 2014, being a top 5 finalist was both an honour and inspiration.
Walking and talking our way around swanky Dolton House we were proud to be among the high calibre of Australian SME finalists. And while the innovative business concepts, models and strategies were enjoyable to learn about, it was the passionate and insightful entrepreneurs at their helm that were the night’s highlight.
Event host, Michael Pascoe, delivered our favourite line of the night – addressing the crowd he encouraged winners and finalists to ‘Milk It.’ And we couldn’t agree more.
Business and industry awards provide an excellent avenue for businesses to build their profile, gain recognition and establish credibility. For those that win there can be the advantages of funding, free press, brand recognition, increased website traffic and social media following. All of which are likely to lead to increased enquiry and sales.
There are also internal benefits for businesses that are announced a finalist or winner. Staff often feel proud to work for a business that has been publically recognised and praised, ultimately leading to an increase in workplace morale. It provides a reason to celebrate, and while this may seem minor, making the time to hail wins contributes to building a culture that values achievement.
Completing an award entry submission can also prove a valuable exercise. While filling out the paperwork, digging up necessary information and strategising over the best way to present can take up a considerable amount of time, it forces entrants to stop and think about the past, present and future of their business. Reflecting on how the business has grown, mistakes made, key achievements, and what still needs to happen to achieve the ultimate vision is key for defining the right path moving forward.
Here’s looking forward to Awards Season 2015 – We hope to see you there!
